On the one hand, I performed this task through gritted teeth.

Gratitude List 29/5/24

  1. Once again I went along to Hampstead, this time to walk with my friend and her dog. For the fact that by some miracle, Flo and Archie did not fight: For friendships that stretch back years, for a chance to catch up: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  2. The fruit stand at Hampstead Overground Station is a work of art in progress: For beauty and dedication: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  3. I vividly remember queuing at the greengrocer, shopping for my mother, maybe aged 12. Then apples cost 30p per pound. Nowadays I reckon they are 30p each at least, but at least this stand still measures and weighs in pounds. For a sense of place and for timelessness and for being accommodated (I do not have any sense of a kilo). Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  4. This morning, in the kitchen and early I was presented with the sight of a deceased mouse. Both of my sons are currently away. Dear Reader I had to deal with it! For being resilient and for the fact that deceased mice are a rarity: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  5. I love my sons dearly, but being 'home alone' is conducive to being able to work, especially being able to write. For space and solitude and for being able to write: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  6. On Monday one son had to catch an early flight. This meant a lift to the airport at 3.15 am. On the one hand, I performed this task through gritted teeth. On the other hand, his adventure meant an adventure for me, because we went to Heathrow under the light of the moon and I returned to see dawn break over London. For the Sacred and the Divine, for Wonder that still sustains me today: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  7. I have been given a new pendulum. It feels to be the most accurate pendulum that I have ever had, and I cannot overrule it. It certainly gives me greater confidence in my work and I am extraordinarily grateful for it. For kindness: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  8. As I write late evening noise comes through the window from St Martins Lane. There is chatter, exuberance, and a few cheers, someone who is famous has a role in Romeo and Juliet and at 10 pm people stand outside the Theatre to acknowledge him. For joyfulness: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  9. I am keeping to my diet and shedding weight. Friends encourage me and cheer me on. I keep a food diary in a beautiful journal given to me for my birthday. For this support I have the most profound gratitude: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

  10. For the sum of a day, holding promises for the rest of the week. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
